On December 2, 2025, the North Dakota Attorney General’s Office released an opinion regarding the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. The opinion determined that the Cass County Sheriff’s Office did not violate open records laws when it sought information about an employee’s identity as part of a separate internal investigation. According to the Attorney General’s Office, this inquiry was unrelated to the handling of an anonymous open records request.

The official statement reads: “The Cass County Sheriff’s Office did not violate the open records law when it inquired into an employee’s identity during a separate internal investigation, as the inquiry was unrelated to the processing of an anonymous open records request.”
