The North Dakota Court System announced on Apr. 6 a temporary work-based learning opportunity for the position of Deputy Clerk of District Court, available at multiple locations across the state. The application period is open until Apr. 24 at 11:59 PM Central time.

This initiative aims to provide high school and college students with exposure to careers within the court system by allowing them to assist with entry-level tasks in county courthouses. According to the announcement, “This is a work-based learning opportunity and summer job for high school students 16 years of age or older and entering or in grade 11 or 12 or college students. This position allows students an opportunity to gain exposure to the types of careers the ND Court System has to offer.” Students will have opportunities for job shadowing and learning about different positions within the courts.

The role involves supporting administrative staff with duties related to case management activities, such as reviewing documents, recording proceedings using audio equipment, handling scheduling, processing legal documents, and providing customer service at public counters. Flexibility in hours and days worked is offered.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent experience as outlined: “Requires a high school diploma and two years of related experience. Any combination of education, training, or experience which demonstrates the ability to successfully complete the major responsibilities and essential functions may be substituted for the experience requirement.” The ideal candidate should be detail-oriented, adaptable, dependable, able to thrive in fast-paced environments, and possess strong interpersonal skills.

Interested applicants are directed to complete an online application through SurveyMonkey provided by the North Dakota Courts. Those graduating from high school or college who seek full-time employment are encouraged to contact Human Resource Director Amy Klein directly.

The program offers practical insight into judicial administration while fostering potential interest among young people considering long-term careers within North Dakota’s legal system.
